Iron Infusions at Berth

Book Phone Appointment

Your iron infusion journey at Berth begins with a bulk-billed phone consultation with one of our Women’s Health GPs.

During the call, our GP will review your symptoms and results (if available) to ensure there are no other underlying health concerns contributing to your iron deficiency. Following this review, our GP will decide whether an iron infusion is the most suitable option for you. If indicated, your iron infusion will be organised and a prescription sent to you via text message.

Please note that this phone appointment request, is not a set appointment time. Phone consultations are generally made on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, at the end of face-to-face consulting, so the exact time may vary.

These calls are specifically for screening and organising iron infusions — not for other medical concerns.

Our iron infusions are available for both pregnant and non-pregnant individuals in Geelong and surrounding areas.
At Berth, our hub is thoughtfully designed to ensure a smooth and comfortable iron infusion experience — all within the relaxed and welcoming atmosphere of our practice.

Why is iron important?

Iron is vital for everyone, supporting essential body functions such as the production of haemoglobin, which carries oxygen to the body's tissues.

Low iron levels can result in fatigue, brain fog, shortness of breath, and a weakened immune system. It’s especially common in women due to factors like decreased absorption, heavy or prolonged periods, and the increased demands during pregnancy and lactation.

Yet, 1 in 5 women remain undiagnosed and untreated for iron deficiency, leading to potential complications like postpartum haemorrhage in pregnancy and decreased overall well-being in non-pregnant individuals.

What to Expect During an Iron Infusion

If an iron infusion is recommended, you can expect to be at Berth for around one hour, which includes pre and post-infusion checks to ensure your safety and comfort.

The infusion itself typically lasts 15-30 minutes, and most patients are able to resume their normal activities shortly afterward.

Benefits of Iron Infusions vs. Oral Supplements

Both oral iron supplements and iron infusions are effective treatments for iron deficiency.

Oral iron works gradually to restore levels and is widely used. Iron infusions provide a more rapid increase in iron levels.

There are pros and cons to both approaches, and we recommend discussing your specific situation with our doctors to determine the best option for you.

Possible Risks

As with any medical procedure, iron infusions come with potential risks.

These may include skin staining (which is rare) but can occur if the iron leaks into the surrounding tissue, allergic reactions, headaches, and fatigue.

We will discuss these risks with you and ensure you have a clear understanding of any possible side effects that may arise during or after the infusion.
